Keyword Popularity

There's a lot of buzz about Keyword popularity, which is misleadingly reported in 2 different ways. Strictly speaking, Keyword popularity should tell you how often people are searching for a given keyword during a period of hours, days, weeks, months, or years on the world wide web.

However, a lot of the online Free Keyword popularity tools give you a different statistic: how often a certain keyword appears on web pages all over the Internet. You can see the difference; medical websites may list an obscure disease millions of times and cite it in millions of research papers, but that doesn't mean anyone outside the medical community has ever even searched for it online.

It can be helpful to know both these statistics (how often people are searching for a keyword, and how many pages the keyword occurs on websites in the www). If you're setting up some advertising space on your website to sell to advertisers (such as AdSense helps you do), you'll want to know how much competition you have for certain keywords.  Sometimes Keyword popularity tools don't clearly state which statistic they're calling Keyword popularity. You need to be sure you know which Keyword popularity statistic you are looking at if you're creating a keyword-based, online advertising campaign.

Google offers Google Keyword Suggestion Tool that can help you find and rate Keyword popularity.
